Kevin Schmidt has a multidimensional background in statewide policy and politics. As a fourth generation public servant to California, he has the institutional knowledge needed to navigate the complex political landscape of this state.
Starting his career with the California Senate Majority leader, Schmidt worked on a broad array of topics including agriculture, water, and energy. He provided support for oversight and investigative hearings involving complex policy issues.
As a volunteer to the Senate Democrats, Schmidt was an appointee to the statewide platform committee and worked on an array of senate campaigns. During the 2014 election cycle he spent his spare time working on the Gavin Newsom for Lieutenant Governor re-elect campaign.
Over the last five years Schmidt has worked as Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom’s Policy Director; focusing on energy, natural resources, economic development, higher education, and marijuana policy.
Schmidt assumed the Lieutenant Governor's place on California Coastal Commission, California State Lands Commission, and Ocean Protection Council. He was charged with policy development, decision-making for multimillion-dollar state budgets, and was a delegate in negotiations for billions in contracts and leases.
Schmidt has a Bachelors of Science degree in business management from Santa Clara University, and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Southern California.
He has an affinity for whiskey, skiing, scuba diving, and anything sports related. He resides in Sacramento with his wife Lauren and his dog Gus.
